Demand Management

Applying for a funding call? Find out whether your funding call is demand managed and what you need to do before applying.

Demand Management

What is Demand Management?

Some research funders limit the number of applications a university can submit. When this happens, Queen Mary runs an internal selection process, known as Demand Management, before applications are submitted to the funder.

If your funding call is demand managed, you will usually need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by an internal deadline. EOIs are assessed against the funder's published criteria to determine which application(s) will proceed.

Which funding opportunities may be demand managed?

Demand management may apply to:

  • Research grants
  • Equipment grants
  • Fellowships
  • Doctoral Training Entity (DTE) calls
  • Funding calls supporting the recruitment of external research talent to Queen Mary
🎓 Doctoral Training Entity (DTE) calls 👥 Recruitment funding calls
Most DTE funding calls are managed through the Centre for Early Career Researchers (CERC). For faculty-specific calls, the faculty will work with CERC to develop the final proposal. Calls supporting the recruitment of external research talent require approval from the relevant Head of School or Director of Institute, confirming strategic alignment and that any required institutional or salary contributions can be supported.

Why do we use demand management?

Queen Mary will consider running a demand management process whenever a funder specifies that our applications to a call that are capped. This helps us to:

  • Select the strongest applications against the funder's published criteria.
  • Provide clear internal timelines.
  • Make efficient use of applicant and reviewer time.
  • Support planning for recurring or complex funding opportunities.
  • Provide feedback following internal review, where applicable.

Your funding call is subject to demand management if:

  • An institutional cap limits the number of applications Queen Mary can submit.
  • The number of applications exceeds the institutional cap.
  • Applications are submitted by more than one faculty or University Research Institute (URI).

📌 Before you apply

If your funding call is demand managed, you must submit an internal Expression of Interest (EOI) by the Queen Mary internal deadline.

Do not submit your application directly to the funder. The internal EOI deadline is earlier than the funder's published deadline.

How does the demand management process work?

If your funding call is demand managed, you'll follow these steps before submitting your full application.

Stage What happens
1. Check the funding call Check whether your funding opportunity is subject to demand management by reviewing the Current demand-managed opportunities page and faculty communications.
2. Submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) Complete and submit your EOI by the internal deadline, following the funder's guidance and Queen Mary's instructions.
3. Internal review Your EOI is reviewed against the funder's published assessment criteria through the relevant faculty and/or central review process.
4. Outcome You'll be informed whether your EOI has been selected to progress. Feedback may be provided where applicable.
5. Full application If your EOI is successful, work with your Research Manager and JRMO team to prepare and submit your full application.
